Should I Stay Home During Roof Replacement? What to Know
Hey neighbors, one of the most common questions I get after we sign a contract is, “Should I stick around while y’all replace my roof?” The honest answer—it depends on you, your family, your pets, and how much noise you can handle. A typical roof replacement here in New Braunfels and the Texas Hill Country takes one to three days. It gets loud, there’s activity all around the house, and it creates a work zone you’ll want to stay clear of for safety.
I put this together to help you decide what works best for your situation and how to prepare so the job goes smooth.

What Happens During a Roof Replacement?
We tear off the old shingles, inspect and repair the decking if needed, install new underlayment and flashing, put on the new roof (we do a lot of premium hail-resistant shingles and metal options around here), and finish with a full cleanup.
Most of the work is outside, but you’ll hear and feel it inside—especially during tear-off and nailing.
How long does it usually take?
- Simple single-story homes: often done in one solid day.
- Larger or more complex roofs (two-story, multiple slopes, dormers): two or three days.
Weather can slow us down, so we always give you a realistic timeline upfront. Plan for the longer side if you’ve got important calls or plans during that window.
The loudest parts: Tear-off and the nailing phase are the noisiest. Inside, it can hit 80-90 decibels upstairs—like heavy traffic or a busy restaurant. Basements and rooms on the opposite side of the house stay a lot quieter.
Reasons Some Homeowners Stay
Plenty of folks in Vintage Oaks, Canyon Lake, Garden Ridge, Gruene, and the surrounding areas choose to stay, and it works well for them:
- Seeing the progress firsthand You can watch the tear-off, check the decking condition yourself, and ask questions as we go. If we find anything unexpected, you can make a quick decision instead of waiting on photos.
- Keeping pets comfortable Dogs and cats often get stressed by the noise. Having you home to keep them in a quiet basement room or give them some reassurance makes a big difference. Boarding works for some, but many prefer staying with their pets.
- Handling deliveries and appointments Packages, groceries, or other service calls are easier to manage if you’re around. We’ll coordinate driveway access, but it helps to have someone on site.
- Working from home A lot of people move their setup to the basement or a back room away from the roof. Noise-canceling headphones help for regular tasks. Just schedule big video calls outside the busiest hours (usually 7 AM–5 PM).
- Final walkthrough and cleanup You can walk the yard with us, see the magnetic nail sweep, check everything looks good, and get your warranty details right then.
Reasons Some Homeowners Leave for the Day
It’s perfectly fine—and sometimes smarter—to head out:
- Noise interfering with work or school — If you have important meetings, need to record audio/video, or have kids doing remote learning, a coffee shop, library, or family member’s place can keep your day productive.
- Young kids or sensitive pets — Little ones napping or pets with strong noise anxiety usually do better away from the house during the loudest parts. A day at grandparents’ or a planned outing works great.
How to Prepare Your House
A little prep makes everything easier:
Inside:
- Move fragile items off high shelves and take down loose wall art on upper floors.
- Cover or shift attic stuff that could collect dust.
- Secure anything that might shake loose.
Outside:
- Pull vehicles, patio furniture, grills, and decorations back from the house.
- We tarp the landscaping, but add extra protection if you want.
Safety notes: Stay away from the perimeter while we’re working—debris can fall. Keep kids and pets inside or off-site. We run a tight safety program, but it’s still a job site. After we leave, do one more quick walk around the yard for any stray nails (we do a magnetic sweep, but an extra check is always smart).
Quick FAQs
Is it safe to stay inside? Yes, as long as you stay clear of windows and the work zone. The roof structure stays solid the whole time.
How loud does it get inside? Pretty loud upstairs during tear-off and nailing, much quieter downstairs. Most people manage it okay, but plan your day around it.
Driveway and utilities? The driveway gets busy with the dumpster and materials—we’ll sort out parking. Power, water, and internet usually stay on without problems.
